Sleeping Mats

Flextail Zero Mattress

This is the Flextail zero mattress, mummy style. Flextail have a “normal” style of this as well but I prefer mummy shape mats to sleep on.

This thing is great. It keeps you so warm and it’s very comfortable, mainly I think because it is a chunky 10cm thick mat with the edges slightly bulkier than the middle to keep you on the mat, almost like bucket seats on cars do.

The mat has an R value of 5.6 so designed to keep you warm throughout the year, especially with UK weather. I have used this mat quite a lot and there is no sign at all of any valve issues or leaks etc. Flextail claim that there is thermal insulation with a 7 layer structure to keep you warm.

Packing wise, it packs down to about 6 inches and weighs about 520g which is not too bad for backpacking etc. I have used this in hammocks, hot tents, backpacking tents and it hasn’t let me down yet.

I paid £120 for this mat but I added the zero pump (not the pump pictured) with it as well. I think it is about £85 on its own, which, when comparing to things like the OEX Flux 7R, is much better value for money.
